today's roadside attraction

august 16

As Priscilla watched, he picked up the phone and dialed his favorite Ford and Chevy agencies, placing rush orders on six deluxe Ford Rancheros and eight Deluxe Chevy El Caminos, demanding twenty-four-hour delivery. "I need 'em by tomorrow," he said. "I don't care where you have to get them." Salesmen worked the phones into the night; some dealers drove the trucks in themselves from as far away as Little Rock.

Eventually Presley bought more than twenty-five trucks. "Everybody got one, whether they wanted one or not," recalled Alan Fortas. That included some of the carpenters and electricians Presley hired. He would say, "This is a ranch! You gotta have a pickup!"
