Let's see... I don't have a job and I'm broke and I'm living in my parents' basement in the suburbs without a car and I'm going to be 41 in two weeks. I want to shriek, HOW THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!?!
~ from "The Snake Pit," by Mary Jo Pehl
On the Page's seventh issue, Home and Escape, takes us all over the globe and to our own basements in essays, art, poems, and fiction that capture the angst and comfort of journeys large and small.
In week one, travel to Cuba through the eyes of photographer Mimi Chakarova. Then, off to the Greek Isles with poet Charles Fishman's memory of Sleeping Near Water. In Wild Birds of the Food Court, Denice Aldrich Jobe looks at safety, longing and escape at the mall. And Mary Jo Pehl will bring you down into The Snake Pit to reveal why you can't go home again. Lastly, if you ever wondered how some travelers arrived at On the Page, check out our odd landings.
In the coming weeks, look for more poems and stories revealing the intersection of everyday adventures and grandiose trips.
Best,
nada
